Female Clothing, Angola, 1786-87

Caption, Princesse nèe de Malembe. Women, the author writes, cover themselves with a large quantity of . . . a sort of glass bead of different colors than Europeans wear. They cover their neck with a small neck scarf, as can be seen in the engraving, and like the men they are very fond of red coral (pp. 74-75; our translation). Author was a French Naval officer who was mainly in the Angola region; engravings in his book were made from drawings done from his own observations in 1786-87.
