Dresses of the Negroes of Senegal at Cape Verd

This image depicts a woman nursing an infant and a man with a bow at Cap-Vert near Gorée in the Senegambia region. Durand generalized how "both the men and women are of a good size, and well shaped; their skin is of so fine a black, that it seems like polished marble" (p. 56). This image is one of several fanciful engravings created by the publisher for this volume and not based on an eye-witness sketch. Jean-Baptiste-Léonard Durand (1742-1812) was a French director for the Compagnie du Sénégal in 1785 and 1786. The first edition in French does not contain any images.
