Description
Caption, Lavage des Diamans; shows group of enslaved males, wearing loin cloths, panning for diamonds; several European overseers watching over them. Location in the Diamond District, Serro Frio (Cerro-do-Frio). The author describes the process of gathering diamonds, how people can be rewarded for their finds as well as the severity of punishments for stealing (pp. 178-179).
