The 1st Louisiana Native Guards, formed in April 1861 of free people of color, was accepted as part of the Louisiana militia, but went over to the Union side in 1862. For details, see James G. Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization was an American political magazine based in New York City and published by Harper & Brothers from 1857 until 1916. It featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects and humor, alongside illustrations.
